The ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are considered as gateways to import goods from Asia into the United States and handle up to 40% of the total amount of goods imported into the United States by sea.

These are also the two largest container terminals in the United States. Currently, ships have to wait at sea for an average of 6.2 days to find a place to load and unload goods in the port, higher than 5.7 days at the end of June. In April 2021, the average waiting time of ships in these two ports reached a record high of 8 days. As the shopping season approaches, congestion at these major ports is getting worse, forcing the authorities to resort to the Navy’s aid.

Containers shipped by sea from two major ports, Los Angeles and Long Beach in California, into the US are severely congested due to the approaching shopping season. A port north of Los Angeles recently announced a partnership with the navy, using a military dock as a container unloading point.

The Ventura County Star reports that the Port of Hueneme and the Ventura Naval Base have reached an agreement. The Navy allows the port of Hueneme to use Navy Pier 3 along with its 2 buildings and surrounding 31 acres (approximately 38,000 ping). Drew Verbis, a spokesman for the naval base, said that the land adjacent to the port of Hueneme was originally used to park warships.

The article writes, this agreement was signed in 2002, but after taking effect in early November (nearly 10 years) it was put into use for the first time. The port of Hueneme, along with the lot of Pier 3, can accommodate a large cargo ship and a 40-foot container loaded with cargo. This solves the problem of high demand for goods during the shopping season.

A spokesperson for the Port of Hueneme said that although large cargo ships have not entered the Port of Hueneme, they are still awaiting discharge at the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach. However, if combined with the land of the naval base, the Port of Hueneme is still able to accommodate a small and medium-sized vessel with 1500 containers, helping to share less the shipping volume of the two ports.
