Baltic Sea freight index up 9 consecutive sessions

The Baltic Exchange Dry Index rose 3% on August 20 to 4,092, its highest level since mid-2010, extending a nine-session streak of gains, driven by commodity demand. Globally, recovery amid further shipping restrictions, especially in China.

The capesize vessel index, which tracks iron ore and coal freight by 150,000 tonnes, rose 5% to its highest level in more than 11 years, at 5,997; The panamax vessel index, which tracks freight rates between 60,000 and 70,000 tons carrying coal and grain, rose 0.8 percent to its highest level in more than a month, at 3,785.
Among smaller ships, the supramax index rose about 39 points to an all-time high of 3,276.

The Baltic Dry Index rose 14.8% in the third week of August, its highest gain since the week ending June 11.
