After the price increase in the last financial year (ending on 31/3/2022), steel exports from India are now witnessing a marked decline at the present time, The Hindu Business Line said. believe.
The reason is due to the pressure of the global recession, the number of orders is less from the main markets, at the same time, the prices in the market are quite competitive.
Specifically, exports decreased by 22% year-on-year in April and was the second consecutive month of decline since March. In which, exports of finished steel decreased by 8% over the same period.
India exported 743,000 tons of finished steel in April compared with 952,000 tons in the same period last year. Meanwhile, in the previous financial year, exports increased 25% year-on-year to 13.5 million tonnes.
According to data from the Indian Steel Ministry, in the last month, the number of orders from countries such as Turkey, Belgium and Nepal has decreased from 12% to 42%. However, prices from Indian mills have increased by about 27% year-on-year.
In April, exports to Belgium fell 42% year-on-year to 76,900 tons; followed by Turkey down 18% to 87,400 tons. Similarly, Nepal fell nearly 12% to 46,700 tons.
Adding other major geographies, Indian mills saw a total decline of 29% in steel exports, to 334,000 tonnes.
Italy was the top export destination in April, with about 130,500 tons, up 3.7%. Meanwhile, Vietnam – India’s largest steel buyer in fiscal year 22 – is the 4th largest market with 67,000 tons.
Factory owners said that Indian offers to the Vietnamese market have eased for the past two months due to lower prices in the region.
Steel prices and demand in Vietnam are falling so export orders continue to be limited. However, a trade source said, orders will improve when China reopens.
