On Monday (January 24), iron ore prices fell as traders appeared cautious ahead of the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday and the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympic Games, Reuters reported.

Accordingly, the DCIOcv1 iron ore contract for May delivery, the most traded on the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE), ended day trading 1.7% lower at 740 yuan. /ton.

Earlier, in the early trading session, this contract extended last week’s rally to 771.50 yuan/ton. This is the highest level recorded since October 13, 2021.

Similarly, the SZZFH2 iron ore contract for March delivery, the most actively traded on the Singapore Exchange (SGX), fell 2.7% to $133.30 a tonne, after hitting a peak of 141.40 USD/ton earlier in the session.

The Lunar New Year holiday schedule at China’s leading steel producer will last from January 31 to February 6. Steel mill operations are expected to be reduced throughout February to improve air quality during the Beijing Olympics.
