The world’s largest container shipping company is expected to open a sea route through Vietnam in August 2021

Recently, Maersk announced that it will open two new international sea routes through the Pacific region in August with a continuous frequency of weekly. These two maritime routes, TPX and TP20, will connect Asia to the west and east coasts of the United States, respectively.

Specifically, the TPX route from Asia to West America and mainly deploys 3,500 teu ships. This maritime route will call at Shenzhen and Ningbo in China, turning at APMT Pier 400, Los Angeles (USA).

Meanwhile, the TP20 service will call through Vung Tau (Vietnam), Ningbo and Shanghai (China), via the Panama Canal to Norfolk and Baltimore on the east coast of the United States. Panamax ships with a tonnage of 4,500 teu will mainly be moved on this waterway.

Maersk said the addition of TPX and TP20 routes is based on regulatory compliance requirements and will not affect the change to the company’s existing ocean network.

In addition, other shipping lines such as HMM (Korea), Zim (Israel) have also added trans-Pacific waterways due to increasing consumer demand, especially in the international market. the use of e-commerce.

Statistics from the Vietnam Seaports Association show that from the beginning of 2021 until now, container cargo through Cai Mep – Thi Vai area (CM-TV) in Vung Tau reached about 2.3 million teu, up 47% compared to the previous year. same period last year. Previously, goods from the southern region mainly passed through Cat Lai port, but now the rate through this port is only 60%, the remaining 40% is through CM-TV. With this achievement, CM-TV continues to be in the group of seaports with the fastest growth in the world, with an increase of about 22% per year.

Accordingly, Vung Tau seaport has gradually formed a corridor connecting the most important economic centers of the country (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City) and connecting internationally with dozens of the largest shipping lines in the world. .

In the first 6 months of 2021, Tan Cang – Cai Mep International Port (TCIT) has received 3 new service routes: AA3, AA7 (connecting Vietnam-US) and CI8 (connecting Vietnam-West India) ) of Wan Hai shipping line, bringing the total number of international service routes at TCIT to 11 routes, of which 7 are connecting to North America, 1 connecting to the US – Canada, 1 to Europe and 2 to Inner Asia. .

In addition, there is still a lot of room for development at these ports, so the throughput of container cargo has achieved a high growth rate of 40-50%. If the new waterway is officially put into operation, this will help Vietnam’s maritime industry in general and Vung Tau in particular come closer to the set goal.

Specifically, in the period of 2021-2025, Vung Tau maritime industry sets a target that the total volume of goods through the port system will reach about 375 million tons, an average of about 75 million tons/year; total revenue from port services is about VND 20,000 billion. It is expected that seaport-related activities will contribute to the State budget in this period about VND 100,000 billion; total revenue from warehousing services, transportation support, port logistics services reached about VND 35,000 billion.
