The Indonesian government announced that it will relax the ban on coal exports, 14 coal tankers are “waiting” to be exported as soon as possible.
According to AFP, earlier this week, the Indonesian government announced that it would relax the ban on coal exports, although this order was only issued on January 1.
Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Coordinating Minister of Maritime Affairs and Investment of Indonesia, said that 14 ships carrying export coal will be exported as soon as possible. However, other export coal barges have to transfer goods to domestic power plants.
Previously, the Indonesian government’s ban on coal exports to prioritize domestic power generation caused the world market to fall into chaos.
Coal prices increased while a large number of ships carrying coal to major customers such as Japan, China and India had to wait outside the port.
Recently, the Philippine Energy Secretary called on Indonesia to lift the ban on coal exports because the policy affects the country’s electricity production. Before that, Japan also made a similar call.
