In 2021, although the seaport network in Vietnam in particular and the world in general is always in a state of congestion because of the Covid-19 epidemic, the volume of container cargo through Vietnamese ports in the first eight months of 2021 is estimated at nearly 16.8. million TEUs.
The evolution of the Covid-19 epidemic is still extremely complicated in Vietnam, especially in the southern provinces and cities, where most of the important seaports connecting trade between Vietnam and the world are concentrated. such as Cai Mep – Thi Vai port (Vung Tau), Cat Lai port (HCMC). Social distancing measures under the Government’s Directive 16 were implemented, reducing the operating capacity as well as the number of workers at these ports.
However, according to statistics of the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the volume of “container goods” through Vietnam’s seaport system in the first eight months of 2021 still has a double-digit growth rate with an increase of 18% over the same period last year. 2020, is estimated to reach nearly 16.8 million TEUs.
In which, exports are estimated at more than 5.4 million TEUs, up 16%; Imported goods were estimated at more than 5.5 million TEUs, up 21% over the same period last year. In addition, in the first 8 months of 2021, the total volume of goods through Vietnam’s seaports is estimated at more than 480.4 million tons, up 4% over the same period in 2020.
Some seaport areas have the highest throughput of containers in the first 8 months of 2021 such as: Quang Nam area increased by more than 115%, My Tho area increased by 41%, Hai Phong area increased by more than 17%, Ho Chi Minh City area increased by nearly 16%.
In contrast, some seaport areas saw a sharp decrease in the volume of container cargo such as: Quang Ninh area decreased by 98%, Da Nang area decreased by 38%, Can Tho area decreased by 23% over the same period in 2020.
Over the past time, the trade agreements that Vietnam has signed have been promoted, import and export activities have grown positively since the beginning of the year. According to the Saigon Newport Corporation, the goods import-export activities are forecasted to still prosper in the last months of the year.
Accordingly, the growth of cargo volume through seaports when the epidemic is soon controlled, free trade agreements are implemented comprehensively and effectively. On the basis of analysis, Saigon Newport Corporation has proposed 3 growth scenarios of seaports in the South.
Specifically, in scenario number 1, the Covid-19 epidemic in Vietnam is under control by the end of the third quarter of 2021, the vaccine is vaccinated on a large scale, businesses start to operate again, the output of goods is normal. Ports in Ho Chi Minh City area will increase from 5-7%, Cai Mep area will increase from 12-15% compared to the first 6 months of the year.
The reason is that shipping lines actively move goods from Ho Chi Minh City to ensure the import and export needs of businesses.
In the second scenario, the epidemic is under control at the beginning of the fourth quarter of 2021, the volume of goods through the ports in Ho Chi Minh City is forecast to increase by 3-5%, the Cai Mep area will increase from 15-17. % because shipping lines and customers increase the conversion of goods to Cai Mep and Ho Chi Minh City will implement regulations on fee collection for infrastructure seaport from October 2021.
The third scenario is that the epidemic is under control in the middle of the fourth quarter of 2021, businesses gradually recover production in the last months of the year with a slower recovery than usual due to the long-term impact of the lockdown. . It is expected that the volume of goods through the seaport areas of Ho Chi Minh City and Cai Mep will be equivalent to the first 6 months of the year.
