Coal demand of thermal power plants decreases because of COVID-19

Electricity consumption this year has dropped sharply since the implementation of social distancing in many provinces and cities. This makes the demand for coal for thermal power plants also decrease.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade, EVN General Director Tran Dinh Nhan said that since the beginning of this year, due to the influence of the COVID-19 epidemic, the evolution of load demand on the power system has fluctuated strongly and is difficult to predict.

Electricity production of the whole system in the first 11 months of 2021 reached 235 billion kWh, an increase of 4.21% over the same period in 2020 and nearly 5 billion kWh lower than the plan approved by the Ministry of Industry and Trade.

In particular, although electricity demand in April, May and June every year grows at a very high rate, this year’s electricity consumption has decreased sharply since the implementation of social distancing in many provinces and cities.

According to the general situation, the demand for mobilization of power plants in general and coal-fired power plants in particular must also decrease in the last months of the year. In particular, coal-fired power plants using imported coal are more affected than domestic coal-fired plants.

Because the demand for electricity decreased compared to the plan, the use of coal also decreased. Accumulated to November 2021, EVN’s factories have received 14.5 million tons of coal supplied by TKV, equal to  80% of the total contract volume in 2021.

It is expected that by the end of 2021, the total volume of coal that EVN’s plants will receive from TKV is 16.2 million tons, reaching 88.7% of the total contract volume in 2021.

Many coal-fired power plants have a low coal consumption rate compared to signed contracts: Quang Ninh 84%, Duyen Hai 1 77%, Pha Lai 54%, Mong Duong 1 93%.

Most of the factories could not perform according to the signed contract volume due to the sharp decrease in electricity consumption demand, leading to a decrease in the mobilization of factories from July 2021 to present.

According to EVN’s assessment, TKV’s coal supply situation in 2021 is relatively stable, meeting the operating needs of EVN’s “thermal power plants”.

However, since TKV provides mixed coal, the quality of coal is often uneven, affecting the stable combustion mode of the boiler, increasing heat loss.

At the same time, this type of coal has many different specifications compared to domestic coal of the same type and is not fully compatible with the design range of power plants such as moisture, hydrogen (decreased boiler efficiency, increased efficiency). heat loss rate), volatile matter, iron oxide content, slag melting point.

The coordination between EVN’s ‘thermal power plants’ and TKV’s coal suppliers still needs to improve efficiency to monitor and adjust the quality of supplied coal in a timely manner.
