Shock: A shipment that stretches nearly as long as the Vietnamese coastline is “stuck” off the coast of the United States

Business Insider reported that more than 70 container ships are floating at sea outside the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach waiting to dock and be unloaded.

Goods on containers are likely not to be delivered on time before the country’s holiday in the context of a supply chain crisis. According to analysis from Bloomberg, if the cargo is unloaded on more than 70 of these container ships, the amount of goods can stretch from Southern California to Chicago or more than 3,000km (nearly the coast of Vietnam – about 3,260km).

The global supply chain has entered crisis mode. The drop in shipping demand around the start of the 2020 pandemic, and the increase in demand later in the year, led to delays and congestion around the world.

Container ships loaded with cargo have been waiting outside the docks for weeks waiting to be unloaded, but with shortages of dock workers and truck drivers, delays have been prolonged as ships are unable to do so. dock and drop the goods.

As of November 1, there are 73 container ships stuck in the area. The number of ships moored has fluctuated around this level for months, reaching a record in October. Before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the highest record for the number of ships moored at this port was only about 17 ships.

This congestion continues even as the White House requires the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach to work 24/7 to ease congestion.

According to Bloomberg, the number of container ships moored off the coast of Singapore was 22% higher than normal on November 1 – the highest number since Bloomberg began tracking this data in April.

Ports in Manila and Jakarta also reported higher-than-normal levels of congestion.

To end the supply chain crisis, it takes investment to improve logistics capabilities and luck, said Simon Heaney, senior manager of maritime research consulting firm Drewry.
