Ukraine hopes to earn about 1.5 billion euros from exporting electricity to the European Union (EU) by the end of this year and more in the future. To do this, Ukraine needs to get the right to sell energy to the EU.

Ukraine began planning to decouple the national power grid from Russia and Belarus after Russia annexed Crimea in 2014. As of early this year, Ukraine was still in the process of testing the system’s autonomy. But when Moscow started hostilities in February, Ukraine was forced to completely disconnect it two and a half years earlier than originally planned, Reuters reported.

By March, Ukraine applied to join the European energy system ENTSO-E as soon as possible. On June 8, grid operator Ukrenergo  announced that it had been granted a license to export energy to Europe.

Lana Zerkal, an adviser to Ukraine’s Minister of Energy, said that all necessary lines from the Ukrainian side are ready to export electricity to Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland.

In an interview with the public television channel  Suspilne, Ms. Lana revealed: “By the end of this year, under normal circumstances, we will have earned about 1.5 billion euros.” She added that Ukraine’s system is working in sync with the EU.

“Ukraine started the licensing process in March, and now the EU has opened up a technical opportunity for us to start the flow of commerce and monetize electricity,” she continued. One of the important things to emphasize is that we did this two and a half years earlier than originally planned, despite the hostilities with Russia.”
